Two destructive education bills are moving through the Statehouse that would open up even more of our public money to private interests with less oversight and diminish local democratic control.

HB 1002 - PASSED Education Committee → Heads to full state House of Representatives:

  • Secretary of Education could have ZERO teaching and education leadership experience.

  • Takes away local rights from elected school boards.

  • Even less oversight of charter schools, including related to board members’ economic interests and discrimination protections.

  • Ends Pre-K programs (amid a childcare crisis) and defunds art programs.

  • Provides more money to charter schools through grant dollars.

  • Eliminates World Religions elective and requirements for teaching American historical documents.

HB 1136:

  • Dissolves public school corporations and replaces them with charters. Would completely dissolve IPS including 50 schools, Gary Community Schools, and several rural schools.

  • Replaces locally elected school boards with state appointed/approved boards.

  • Exempts charter schools from requirements public schools have, including to provide for special needs.

We, the undersigned, demand that public schools remain public.

We believe in a single, universal, well-funded public education for all people, democratic control over education via elected school boards, and protection of all educators' right to organize in unions.

We call on all members of the Indiana General Assembly to protect our hard-fought system of public education, voting down HB1136, HB 1002, and any other bills that weaken teachers and public schools.
