Stay the Execution of Curtis Windom
Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency

On August 28, the State of Florida is scheduled to execute Curtis Windom. Curtis’ life story is one of profound childhood trauma, severe brain injury, mental illness, and failed representation by a trial attorney who could not meet even the most basic standards of competence. Curtis was sentenced to death for the 1992 murders of Johnnie Lee, Valerie Davis, and Mary Lubin. We acknowledge and honor the loss experienced by the families of these individuals. Still, we cannot honor the victims with more killings. Governor DeSantis must stop this execution.

We stand together to urge you to stay the execution of Curtis Windom and grant clemency. This does not mean excusing harm or evading accountability. Life without parole ensures separation and safety without continuing the cycle of violence.
Curtis was born into violence and poverty. His mother gave birth to him while standing in a bathroom, and he fell headfirst onto the floor. As a teenager, he survived a horrific car accident that left him unconscious for hours and hospitalized for days. Doctors later found clear evidence of brain damage.
Despite overwhelming evidence of mental illness and impairment, Curtis never received a fair trial. In 1992, Florida required no specialized experience for lawyers defending capital cases. His trial attorney failed to investigate, delayed psychiatric evaluations until it was too late, and presented no defense in the penalty phase. The trial judge herself admitted she had to monitor Curtis’ counsel for signs of intoxication, going so far as to personally smell his breath for alcohol each morning. He was later disbarred after multiple DUI arrests, both before and after Curtis’ trial.
The death penalty is irreversible. Life without parole ensures safety, accountability, and justice without compounding violence with more violence. We respectfully ask that you stay this execution and grant clemency for Curtis Windom.
