Stop 14 new energy-guzzling Ad Screens in Selly Oak!

Birmingham City Council

Advertising giant Clear Channel want to install seven new double sided bus stop units in Selly Oak. This development will waste a shocking amount of electricity - more than 30 UK homes!

On top of this horrendous waste of energy, and light pollution that is decimating insect populations, advertising is bad for our communities because it hurts our mental health, our local economy, our physical well-being and our personal finances. We don’t need more ads on our streets.

Advertising companies attempt to push planning permission through for this energy-guzzling infrastructure at the busiest times, such as festive periods and during election dates. We appreciate that Birmingham City Council are very busy at present, however we don't feel they should grant planning permission in haste.

It's easy to contest applications for such new developments but until now no one really has. This is where we need you! Adblock Brum would like your help to say NO! for the planning permission of seven new double-sided digital ad spaces in Selly Oak. Please read and sign our petition today.

Dear Birmingham City Council,

We strongly object to the proposal to install seven new bus stop advertisement units in Selly Oak. If installed, the combined units will use more electricity than 30 average British homes*. Birmingham City Council have declared a climate emergency, and should therefore not permit a development that will waste so much energy.

The proposals from applicant Clear Channel make it clear that they intend to see the widespread development of digital advertising units across their portfolio of sites. However, the introduction of such energy-hungry infrastructure is completely at odds with creating a greener, cleaner city and should be rejected on sustainability grounds.

We understand that Clear Channel has a contractual arrangement with Birmingham City Council to maintain bus stop infrastructure in exchange for the right to advertise at us. We urge the Council to re-appraise these contracts in light of the worsening climate crisis and abandon these energy intensive advertising units.

Birmingham is already full of corporate advertising imploring us to buy new cars, fizzy drinks, junk food, fast fashion and the latest consumer purchases. These adverts are bad for our mental health, our levels of personal debt, our wellbeing and our environment. We need to resist new advertising infrastructure in order to respond appropriately to the climate emergency and improve the wellbeing of our communities.

We would welcome a meeting with the Council to discuss these issues.

Signed
