Once again Orange County is being sacrificed for the needs of New York City. Just as NYC's commercial waste overhaul takes effect, the NYS DEC has issued a permit for the Marangi waste station — run by the same family whose hauling companies were just purchased by Interstate Waste, the New Jersey conglomerate holding the largest share of NYC's commercial waste contracts — planned right beside the Heritage Trail. 248 garbage trucks a day. 950 tons of garbage and construction debris-waste that routinely contains lead paint, asbestos, treated wood, and silica dust. No restriction anywhere in the permit on where the waste comes from. Operations starting as early as 4 a.m. And this dump joins a corridor of industrial warehouses totaling millions of square feet — more than 2,000 truck trips a day, by the Town's own admission. What stands to be lost: the wetlands and wildlife surrounding the Heritage Trail, the air and water our families and farms depend on, and the State-designated Disadvantaged Communities that the law is supposed to protect — unequivocally.
