Stop the East Greenwich Data Center In a Residential Zone

East Greenwich Township Planning/Zoning Board, East Greenwich Township Committee

American Tower Corporation has proposed a 4-megawatt data center in the Mount Royal section of East Greenwich, right next to residences. It threatens the quality of life, environment, and cost of living for those in the area and concerned neighbors need to take action now before it’s too late. Please sign your name onto the below petition, share it with a friend, and plan to attend the Planning/Zoning Board Meeting on April 21, 2026 at 7PM.

We, the undersigned residents of East Greenwich Township and other concerned citizens, respectfully submit this petition to express our strong opposition to the proposed construction and operation of a data center within our residential community. While we recognize the importance of technological infrastructure in today’s economy, placing a large-scale data center potentially for AI use, in a residential area raises serious concerns regarding quality of life, environmental impact and community well being.

---------------
Key Concerns:

- Noise Pollution: Chillers, condensing units, and transformers are expected to produce a constant noise 24-hours a day and backup generators may run as loud as 104db, nearly as loud as a chainsaw.
- Water Use: The proposal, despite failing to include water use projections, is expected to pull from East Greenwich’s municipal supply to replenish its water cooling system.
- Energy Use: The site will have a 4-megawatt energy draw roughly equivalent to 3,000 - 4,000 homes in a town with only roughly 4,000 housing units.
- Air Pollution: While the application does include on-site diesel emergency power generation it includes no air quality impact assessment despite being close to residences and a playground.
- Safety: The data center will house significant electrical equipment and back-up fuel systems which introduces fire or hazard risks only 50 feet from the residences of Oakridge and Weathervane Farms.

---------------
Our Demands:

No Data Center Now
- We ask the Planning/Zoning Board to deny the proposal from American Tower Corporation to build a data center in a dense residential-zoned area. The maximum potential sound and consistent noise, 4 megawatt power draw, and drain on municipal resources make this unacceptable to approve.

No AI-Data Center Ever
- We ask for the Township Committee to pass an ordinance to ban future AI Data Centers OR propose a referendum for the community to have the final say. This must include a ban on water cooling, behind-the-meter power generation (excluding renewables), and impose a stronger maximum noise threshold.

No More Unaccountable Proposals
- Full recorded/transcribed township committee and planning/zoning board meetings posted on town website and include notification of major construction proposals in all township email lists.

---------------
We encourage the East Greenwich Township Planning/Zoning Board and East Greenwich Township Committee to follow through on these demands for the sake of the quality of life of the residents of East Greenwich, especially those located in Oakridge, Weathervane Farms, and Greenwich Crossing that would be most affected if this proposal is approved.
