Stop Gutting Our Hospitals: Demand Accountability from Prime Healthcare

Prem Reddy, Prime Healthcare

Prime Healthcare promised to protect our care. Instead, they are gutting our community.

Since acquiring St. Joseph’s Medical Center in March 2025, Prime Healthcare has followed its' dangerous, profit-driven playbook: reducing, suspending, and eliminating vital services while implementing unsafe staffing levels that put both nurses and patients at risk.

This isn't just a local issue—it’s a national pattern. Despite testifying to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (HFSRB) that there would be no loss of services, Prime has pivoted to putting profits over people. From settling $100 million Medicare fraud claims to shutting down entire hospitals and "unprofitable" units across the country, Prime Healthcare’s leadership has proven they cannot be trusted with our public health without strict oversight.

To Prem Reddy and Prime Healthcare Leadership:
This statement serves as a collective demand that the community will no longer tolerate the systematic “gutting” of our hospital. Since the March 2025 acquisition of St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Prime Healthcare has operated in direct betrayal of its testimony to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board and the community.
We demand the following immediately:
• Invest in Frontline Workers: End the exploitation of the workforce. Stop the unsafe staffing changes and provide the investment necessary for nurses, healthcare workers and physicians to operate safely and provide for our patients. Our lives are not a line item to be trimmed.
• Stop the Unit Closures: Cease the suspension and elimination of all services. We refuse to allow a vital medical center to be hollowed out into a barely operational clinic.
• Public Accountability & Oversight: We demand total transparency and public intervention. Your "no loss of services" promise was a binding commitment, and we will fight to ensure it is enforced.
• People Over Profits: End the predatory practice of purchasing community hospitals to "gut" them. Healthcare is a human necessity, not a vehicle for corporate greed.
Prime Healthcare is on notice. We are organized and we will not stop until the health of our community is prioritized over your profit.
