Stop Mass Surveillance in Coralville
Coralville City Council
The Iowa City Democratic Socialists of America Steering Committee stands with residents of Johnson County, Iowa, in opposing the deployment of mass surveillance technology like Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR). We urge the Coralville City Council not to deploy these cameras and to consider a resolution banning ALPRs due to the dangers to privacy that these technologies pose for our citizens.
These systems will:
- Indiscriminately track the movement of all residents, regardless of their association with a criminal charge or public safety emergency.
- Cause errors and inaccuracies that trigger dangerous interactions between law enforcement and community residents.
- Present a risk of abuse by law enforcement authorities for purposes beyond the initial stated goals of implementing the technology.
- Result in racial bias in policing and law enforcement.
