Stop Oligarchs Buying Democracy!
Keir Starmer, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Democracy Rushanara Ali
Billionaires are gaining too much power over our democracy. It's time to stop them.
Why this?
The super-rich have acquired huge amounts of new wealth over the last 10 years and they're using it to manipulate our political system. It's not just Elon Musk threatening to donate $100 million to Reform; it's UK billionaires bankrolling shady companies to funnel money to friendly politicians, prominent donors getting contracts or even seats in the House of Lords, and armies of lobbyists treating MPs to hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of donations.
We think this problem is getting worse. We know that large donations are a growing share of political party incomes. We know that unelected officials have more influence than they used to. We know that our media is even more concentrated in the hands of billionaires than it used to be.
We need you to sign now to stop this. The more pressure we build, the better our chances of success. Every name – including yours – makes a difference.
Why act now?
The UK is in crisis and the super-rich are working incredibly hard to keep it going by preventing fair taxes on the richest and real devolution of power.
In the 2026 local elections, super-rich donors will have a huge chance to entrench more inequality into UK's political system.
We need to fix the system before the next general election.
What do we want?
This petition is calling for immediate changes that would limit the ability of the super rich to directly influence politics. These are:
- An immediate ban on overseas donations without loopholes.
- Ban large donations to political parties outright with a strict cap of less than £1000 per person per year.
- Get rid of loopholes that allow payments to be routed through family members, shell entities, or corporate vehicles.
- Real power for the Electoral Commission to investigate and punish wrongdoing.
In the longer term, we need real reform of the House of Lords and Commons to crack down on cronyism, break up oligarch media monopolies, and build new systems that put people at the heart of democracy.
