Stop Summer Shutoffs

Eversource

The summer is heating up and electricity prices are rising. We want everyone to be able to have access to affordable electricity during the heat waves. No one should get their power turned off during a heat wave if they cannot afford to pay. That’s why we’re launching a new demand for utility justice: NO SUMMER SHUTOFFS!

Eversource has a policy to not shut off people’s electricity in the height of winter to prevent families from freezing weather. But they don’t have a policy during the summer to protect people from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With the cost of electricity rising, more people are struggling to keep up with their bills. We need a moratorium on shutoffs during the summer to protect our communities from the heat.

The cost of living is at an all-time high and a record number of families are struggling to pay their utility bills. While Eversource has a policy to not shut off people’s electricity in the height of winter, you don’t have that policy during the worst heat of summer.
We, the undersigned, call on Eversource to stop summer electricity shutoffs due to the inability to pay, so that no one is caught in a heat wave, unable to plug in a fan or air conditioner. Utility companies need to prioritize the wellbeing of the communities they serve over their profit margins. Preventing shutoffs during extreme cold and extreme heat is good policy when access to electricity can be the difference between safety and a visit to the emergency room or worse.
