Stop the Cuts, Stop the Layoffs, Staff Our Schools!
Dr. Negrón, Mayor Elicker, and the New Haven Board of Education / Dr. Negrón, Alcalde Elicker y la Junta de Educación de New Haven

Children in New Haven deserve access to a world class education that includes fully funded and fully staffed schools. However, as a result of a broken school funding system in our state and a lack of transparent budgeting practices in our city, our students and our school communities endure the impact of budget deficits and staffing cuts year after year.
- In 2018 NHPS cut library media and school counselor positions in order to mitigate the budget, doubling the workload for librarians and counselors who were not laid off.
- In 2020-2021 NHFT members agreed to a salary freeze in order to support the District’s budget mitigation efforts. NHFT members saved NHPS $5 million dollars by forgoing their raises; Administrators and management did not.
- Just last spring, and again this spring, NHPS cut teaching positions and involuntarily transferred educators. This has disrupted our school communities, limited student opportunities, and resulted in larger class sizes for our students.
Before a single cut is made to arts, athletics, libraries, academic coaches, afterschool programs, or to any student-facing position such as classroom teachers, paraeducators and athletic coaches, we urge Dr. Negrón, Mayor Elicker, and the Board of Education to listen to the needs of the community and stop the cuts, stop the layoffs, and staff our schools.

We call on Dr. Negrón to hear from the community first before making any more cuts to our schools and classrooms. We call on Mayor Elicker and the New Haven Board of Education to:
-Reject any layoff proposals that seek to cut student-facing positions from our school communities
-Implement necessary budget mitigation strategies before any student-facing positions are cut
-Make cuts to the Executive Team and Central Office management positions; if we cut 5 management positions, we can save 12 student-facing positions at the school level
-Freeze all Executive Team salaries and hires
-Freeze spending for all travel and conferences for NHPS employees
-Freeze contracts with vendors to provide professional development; professional development can be planned and facilitated by supervisors and coordinators
-Cap allocations for retention of lawyers and legal fees and ensure adherence by the Superintendent and Board of Education
-Close and sell 21 Wooster Place; authorize personnel from the Office of Academics to work out of school buildings
-Sell unused school buildings and discontinue payment of maintenance, utilities, and security
-Assess and revise bus routes based on current student usage
-Increase permit fees for rentals of NHPS properties
-Complete and publish a complete forensic audit of the Board of Education;
-Release a complete, detailed, site-based budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year
We are committed to the ongoing fight at the state level to address longstanding inequalities in Connecticut school funding. We are also committed to being ready for our 19,000 students who are eager to have a positive start to the next school year. This requires transparency, collaboration, community voice, and a collective commitment to stop the cuts, stop the layoffs, and staff our schools.
