Stop the Dual Membership Ban Defend a Broad, Democratic Socialist Movement
Your party CEC
We, the undersigned, oppose the proposed “Dual Party Membership Eligibility” framework put forward by the leadership of Your Party in April 2026.
Conference agreed that Your Party should be a broad, pluralistic, democratic socialist movement. This proposal undermines that principle.
The policy seeks to exclude members based on affiliation with other socialist organisations, including groups across the labour movement and left traditions. It introduces a top-down system of surveillance, vetting, and administrative removal of members without democratic accountability.
We believe this is wrong in principle and damaging in practice.
Why we oppose this policy:
1. It undermines party democracy
This framework shifts power away from members and towards centralised structures, allowing administrative exclusion rather than democratic debate and decision-making.
2. It restricts political freedom and association
Socialists have always organised across different groups, campaigns, and traditions. Banning dual membership punishes people for political engagement rather than encouraging participation.
3. It weakens the movement
At a time when unity is needed to challenge inequality, austerity, and injustice, this policy divides activists and excludes experienced organisers from the party.
4. It creates a culture of suspicion and policing
The proposed “due diligence” process encourages monitoring of members’ political activity and risks factional targeting, rather than fostering trust and solidarity.
5. It contradicts the party’s founding vision
Your Party was created as an open, democratic alternative – not a controlled or exclusionary organisation.
We call on the leadership to:
- Scrap the proposed dual membership ban in full
- Respect the democratic decision of conference
- Uphold members’ rights to political association
- Commit to openness, pluralism, and internal democracy
- Ensure any membership disputes are handled democratically, not administratively
Our message is clear:
A democratic socialist party must trust its members not police them.We stand for a broad, inclusive, and democratic movement, not one that excludes people for their political affiliations.
