Stop the Execution of Daniel Conahan in Florida

Florida Board of Executive Clemency and Governor Ron DeSantis

U.S. Navy veteran Daniel Conahan is scheduled for execution in Florida on September 10, 2026, for the 1996 murder of Richard Montgomery. This marks the 16th death warrant issued by DeSantis this year.

Mr. Conahan has steadfastly maintained his innocence in this case, and courts are actively considering his request for additional DNA testing. Florida should not move forward with an execution while questions that could be examined through additional scientific testing remain unresolved.

There is no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Richard Montgomery, the case is purely circumstantial. Rather than the medical examiner evaluating the remains of Richard Montgomery, then proceeding to form a theory of what happened, they went against proper scientific principles by trying to fit their findings around a theory already established by law enforcement. Anyone with a background in the natural sciences know that is against the very basis of the scientific method.

One of the key witnesses presented by the State at trial was a "seasoned jail house snitch". Just 6 days after Gov. DeSantis signed the warrant for Daniel, Daniel's legal team found another man who was present in the same jail cell with Daniel and the snitch. He tells a very different story than the snitch. He affirms that Daniel "never wavered in his denial of any participation".

DeSantis' history in the military would make him compassionate to his fellow soldiers and all that they experience during their duty."

This is already the 16th death warrant of 2026, following an unprecedented execution pace in 2025, when Florida led the nation with 19 executions. Florida is on track to exceed this tragic and dark record in 2026.

While most states have moved away from the death penalty, Florida is accelerating executions at an alarming rate. Each warrant signed underscores the state’s embrace of a punishment that is arbitrary, racially biased, and out of step with evolving standards of decency.
