Stop the Layoffs at UCSD and Invest in Students & Workers!

UCSD Administration & Leadership

We know that front-line workers—such as those who work in the library, transportation, Extended Education, Academic affairs and many more—care about the students they serve. But does UCSD care about its students and staff? Or does administration only care about profit, fancy buildings and their astronomical salaries?

UCSD is laying off hundreds of workers, including 16 Teamsters workers in the library, a critical resource for students working toward degrees. UCSD previously cut the library’s overnight hours. Now they’re cutting research staff and administrative assistants who make UCSD’s world-class library function.

How is this possible when enrollment and tuition are increasing? Honestly, we don’t know because UCSD refuses to tell us. UCSD says that they believe they have met their obligations, and therefore do not need to work with us on alternative layoffs.

Is this how a highly regarded public institution should operate?

We’re asking students, parents and the San Diego community to tell UCSD to focus their money on academic programs, the resources that students need and the workers who provide the support needed.

Our school housing advisers, enrollment staff, administrative aides, academic program managers, and more staff are the lifeblood of operations of UCSD. Their dedication everyday to ensure students have the support they need does not reflect in your support of them and begs the question: does UCSD truly value its students and staff, or only profits, new buildings, and ever-rising executive salaries?

UCSD is currently laying off workers, including 58 Teamsters members in the library, a resource critical to student research and academic success which is after previous cuts to overnight library hours. This now threatens the research staff and assistants who keep the library functioning at a world-class level.

How can UCSD continue to justify these cuts while tuition and enrollment continue to increase? The administration has refused to provide answers, instead claiming to have met the “letter of the law” in notifying the union of these layoffs. This lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable and disrespectful to the entire UCSD community.

We call on UCSD to:

- Protect academic programs.
- Maintain and expand student resources.
- Respect and retain the frontline workers who make UCSD thrive.

We strongly urge you to stop these layoffs, offer transparency and reinvest back in the people who are critical in serving students. The San Diego community, parents, students, and staff are watching—and we are demanding better from UCSD.
