I urge you to oppose the Take It Down Act, a bill that threatens end-to-end encryption and will allow Trump to censor his critics online. End-to-end encryption keeps us safe from privacy breaches and hacks and repressive states. Even government officials use encrypted messaging for a reason: it protects them from bad actors. Companies will choose over-compliance to protect their bottom line, knowing they risk nothing by removing protected speech. Malicious actors, including the president, will abuse takedowns to remove content they dislike and will face no penalties for doing so. Take It Down is an unacceptably dangerous solution to this pressing problem.
