STOP THE TEES VALLEY INCINERATOR!
North East Council leaders Stephen Harker (Darlington), Andrew Husband (Durham), Brenda Harrison (Hartlepool), Mayor Chris Cooke (Middlesbrough), Karen Kilgour (Newcastle), Alec Brown (Redcar & Cleveland) and Lisa Evans (Stockton-on-Tees)
The Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility (TVERF) secured planning permission and has recently been issued an Environment Agency permit to operate, despite many submitted objections, but we still have a chance to stop it. The 7 councils are being asked to sign up to the contract individually (late September), so if we can get 2 or 3 to pull out, the project will collapse. We produce just under 1 million tonnes of waste in the North East, yet we have 1.4 million tonnes of existing incinerator capacity in the region, and around another 2 million tonnes of additional capacity with planning permission. The TVERF is simply not needed, and without cancellation looks set to be an expensive mistake. Please sign this petition ASAP and share widely. A copy of the collected signatures will be handed in to each leader.

We are asking all 7 Council Leaders involved with the TVERF (Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility) to press the ‘Pause’ button and debate/review plans for this waste incinerator with a vote at a Full Council meeting instead of simply signing up to this disastrous project which will cost a fortune, harm recycling rates, and emit pollution for decades to come. We already have more than enough waste incinerators in the North East. It is time to end the TVERF project!
