The Trump administration has announced a $700 million taxpayer-funded slush fund for the coal industry to keep aging coal plants running, reopen retired facilities, build new coal plants, and construct new coal export infrastructure.

This slush fund is a giveaway to polluters at the expense of American families.
Instead of investing in affordable clean energy solutions that lower costs and create jobs, the administration is forcing taxpayers to prop up an industry that is expensive, unhealthy, and fueling the climate crisis.

Coal is already losing to cleaner and cheaper alternatives like solar and wind. Studies show that 99% of existing U.S. coal plants cost more to operate than replacing them with new wind or solar energy. Yet this slush fund would spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to keep outdated coal facilities online.

Americans are already struggling with rising energy costs. Electricity bills have gone up 18% since Trump came back. This coal slush fund will only increase the burden on consumers while enriching coal executives.

The consequences go beyond our wallets.

Coal pollution is linked to cancer, heart disease, respiratory illness, and premature death. Over the last two decades, approximately 460,000 Americans have died from pollution associated with coal-fired power plants. Experts estimate that coal-related health impacts cost communities between $13 billion and $26 billion every year.

Coal is also the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel and a major driver of climate change. Power plant pollution is the second largest source of climate pollution in the U.S. At a time when communities across the country are facing extreme heat, floods, wildfires, and other climate disasters, diverting taxpayer money to coal moves us in the wrong direction.

We call on Congress to:
- Publicly oppose the Trump administration's $700 million coal slush fund and reject the misuse of emergency authorities to subsidize uneconomic fossil fuel production.
- Invest in affordable energy

Congress must stand with working families, not coal executives.
