Stop Unnecessary Gravel Pits in ACW Township
ACW Township Council

To: Mayor Glenn McNeil and ACW Township Council
We, the residents of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Township and their supporters, demand immediate action to protect our community from unnecessary gravel pit development.
The Evidence is Clear: At a recent Ontario Land Tribunal hearing, ACW's own township planner, Denise Van Amersfoort, provided damning testimony that proves we don't need more gravel pits:
- ACW extracts 100 times the provincial per capita average for aggregate
- Existing pits use only 25% of their licensed capacity (1.6 million of 6 million tonnes)
- Most of the extracted gravel is shipped outside ACW - there's no local demand
- The planner admitted she made no assessment of actual need
- She ultimately conceded it was "a mistake to say we need sand and gravel" in our area
Enough is Enough! Our rural community is being sacrificed for an industry that ships resources to distant markets while we bear the costs: truck traffic, noise, dust, environmental destruction, declining property values, loss of valuable irreplaceable farm land, and damage to the Maitland Valley Watershed.
We Demand Action: ACW Township Council must immediately implement protective measures:
- Pass an Interim Control By-law (ICBL) to freeze new gravel pit development
- Amend the Official Plan to require demonstrated local need for any future operations
- Pass a Council Resolution establishing that ACW has a documented oversupply and new pits are not needed
Your own planner has provided the evidence. Now act on it.
Protect our community, our environment, and our quality of life. Stop approving unnecessary gravel pits that serve only corporate profits while destroying our community.
