Support affordable workforce housing in Hayes Valley

Mayor London Breed, MOHCD Director Daniel Adams, MOHCD Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs Sheila Nickolopoulos, MOHCD Deputy Director for Housing Lydia Ely, SF Board of Supervisors

Families, including teachers, firefighters, service providers, and countless other essential workers integral to a diverse and vital San Francisco can no longer find housing they can afford. The city’s goal is to build 82,000 new housing units, 47,000 of which must be affordable, by 2031. In 2022, we only added 2,807 units, with 1,207 designated as below market rate.

In 1999 San Francisco voters approved Proposition I to tear down the Central Freeway, which also
mandated housing be built on 22 “parcels” of land where the freeway once stood. Seven of those 22
parcels, including Parcel K, an 11,430 square foot lot at the corner of Hayes and Octavia Streets
next to Patricia's Green were purchased with money earmarked for the construction of 100%
affordable housing.

Owned outright by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD), with zero upfront acquisition costs Parcel K could be developed relatively easily and quickly with upwards of 75 housing units. Yet, despite the promise, as well as a legal commitment made over two decades ago to build affordable workforce housing on Parcel K, there is now an effort underway to block it.

If you agree that the City's leadership should address our housing crisis and fulfill it’s housing goals, SIGN THIS PETITION urging MOHCD to immediately move forward with the development of affordable workforce housing on Parcel K in Hayes Valley.
