Support Columbia, SC's Bump Stock Ban

Columbia, SC Mayor Steve Benjamin and City Council

The city of Columbia, South Carolina is poised to become the first place in the nation to ban “bump stocks.”

Bump stocks are attachments that can turn legal guns into weapons that simulate illegal, fully automatic gunfire. They are what allowed the Las Vegas shooter to kill 58 people and injure 546 more.

We are excited about the courageous stand by Mayor Steve Benjamin and the Columbia City Council. But they face some serious opposition.

South Carolina’s version of Roy Moore, Catherine Templeton, is using the bump stock ban to boost her far right campaign for governor. She threatened the mayor and council with a Steve Bannon-like threat, “You come for my guns, and I’ll come for your seat!”

We can’t allow the far right to stop us from protecting our citizens. Please sign our petition in support of Mayor Benjamin and the Columbia City Council.

If a city in solidly red South Carolina can pass a bump stock ban, then we can do it anywhere.

According to The State newspaper, “Columbia’s proposed ordinance would make it illegal to attach bump stocks or trigger cranks to any guns within the city, except by military or law enforcement personnel. It would still be legal to own those devices, so long as they are stored in separate containers from firearms.

We support the efforts of the City of Columbia to ban the use of bump stocks and trigger cranks, attachments that turn legal guns into weapons that simulate illegal, fully automatic firearms. We agree with Mayor Benjamin and we’re tired of this paralysis in Washington to do anything reasonable to help stop this carnage on our streets. It is time for local communities to take action to protect our citizens.
