Support down-zoning Milwaukee Ave to ensure local community control of development

Alderman Carlos Rosa - 35th ward, Chicago

The Milwaukee Avenue corridor has seen unchecked development that is out of scale and character for the community - rents for residential and commercial units in these new buildings are double or more of the previously prevailing rates in the area, the heights and architecture are jarringly out-of-place, and the opinions of area residents have been ignored. This stretch of Milwaukee has become a vector of gentrification, along with the 606 trail. Existing multi-family buildings are being torn down and replaced with towers of luxury apartments priced out of the range of existing residents - people and their homes are thus being used as commodities to generate outsize profits.

Ald. Rosa has taken measures to stop such unnecessary development, and is now proposing to down-zone Milwaukee-Ave to B2-1 between Kimball and Central Park. Since Ald. Rosa has a community-driven zoning and development process, down-zoning will mean that if a developer wants to build a tower of luxury apartments or something else that is out-of-scale, he will have to seek community approval.

Please join hundreds of your neighbors, and community-based organizations such as Somos Logan Square, Logan Square Preservation, and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association in supporting this proposal!

We support the down-zoning of Milwaukee Avenue in order to give the community control over development in their neighborhoods.
