Support for 5th/ 6th Complete Streets

UPDATE (12/9/22):

Within the past week, 5th Street from Alvernon to Wilmot was removed from the Complete Streets project website. The project now appears to only include 5th/ 6th Street from Campbell to Alvernon.

The day after we emailed the Public Information Officer for the project to request information, their name and email address was removed from the project website.

It appears that 5th Street from Alvernon to Wilmot will not receive any pedestrian, bicycle, or vehicular safety improvements, even though these changes would improve safety, traffic operations, walkability, and bikeability while also having a minimal impact on traffic flow.

The decision to take 5th Street from Alvernon to Wilmot off the table lacked transparency.

We deserve to know why this community-supported, data-driven plan is being gutted.

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility has been planning a project to improve 6th Street from Campbell Ave to Country Club Rd and 5th Street from Country Club Rd to Wilmot Rd. Detailed information about the project can be found on the Tucson Delivers: 5th/6th Street Complete Streets website.

Proposed Change from 4 Lanes to 3:

5th Street/6th Street from Campbell to Wilmot is being considered for a conversion from the existing 4-lane configuration--two vehicle traffic lanes in each direction--to 3 lanes--one vehicle lane in each direction, with a center turn lane and bike lanes being added. Sometimes referred to as a “road diet”, “lane conversion”, or “rightsizing”, this proposed reconfiguration of the roadway aims to improve traffic operations and reflect the changing needs of the community.


Why Reduce Lanes?

Traffic volumes on 5th/6th have been declining for 20 years, which makes them good candidates for a conversion from 4 to 3 lanes. The existing roadway mostly serves cars, and converting it to 3 lanes will make room for dedicated bike lanes, improved pedestrian crossings, and a more comfortable experience for everybody who walks or rolls.

Turning our streets into Complete Streets can eliminate preventable traffic fatalities, ensure people of all ages and abilities can travel around the city safely, protect the environment, improve public health, and break our dependence on cars.
