Support the Charleston County Climate Action Plan

Charleston County Council

Charleston County’s projected climate costs are $6,319,023,000 by 2040. The climate crisis threatens us with rising seas, worsening hurricanes, & extreme heat; interruption in tourism and economic prosperity; damage to human health and public safety; degradation and loss of coastal ecosystems; and more.

So much climate action potential is at the local level. We believe the Charleston County CAP represents a great chance for Charleston to do its part.

We the people of Charleston County ask Charleston County Council to pass the Charleston County Climate Action Plan in order to encourage and facilitate investment in: affordable, resilient buildings; sustainable and inclusive transportation; clean energy generation; an innovative industrial and agricultural sector; and optimized waste and water stewardship.

Under the CHS County CAP there are projected to be opportunities for investments that could reach $500 million per year, generate on average 3,400 jobs each year, and leverage nearly $150 million per year for ten years of federal dollars from the Inflation Reduction Act.

We have such a big opportunity here to move towards a healthier and more equitable Charleston while taking action on our most existential threat. Let's pass the plan and get to work!

Dear Members of Charleston County Council,

Please accept this letter of support for the Charleston County Climate Action Plan. As a resident of the county we fully recognize the urgent need to address the impacts of climate change on our local environment, economy, and communities.

Charleston County is projected to be one of the locations most threatened by climate change in the United States. Rising seas, worsening extreme weather events and extreme heat will impact our local communities, our economy, and our health and safety throughout the County.

The Charleston County CAP outlines a comprehensive strategy to combat climate change through measures focused on affordable, resilient buildings; sustainable and inclusive transportation; clean energy generation; innovative industrial and agricultural practices; and optimized waste and water stewardship. We also value the plan’s weight towards equity and Charleston County’s most vulnerable populations.

We see this plan as an opportunity to generate thousands of jobs, leverage hundreds of millions of dollars in federal money to repair and improve our local systems, and create lasting impacts that push our communities to be more connective, resilient, equitable, and just.

We urge the Charleston County Council to prioritize the adoption and implementation of the Charleston County CAP. By doing so, we can not only address the pressing challenges of climate change but also position Charleston County as a leader in sustainable development and resilience planning.

We stand ready to support and collaborate with the Charleston County Council in the realization of the Charleston County Climate Action Plan. Together, we can build a more sustainable, prosperous, and resilient future for all residents of Charleston County.
