Support the Food Bin Housing Project

Santa Cruz City Council

rendering of the Food Bin project

This petition is in support of the proposed mixed-use infill housing project at 1130 Mission St, also known as the Food Bin project.

This project proposes type of housing that is much-needed in our city and is located on a transportation corridor with access to services, schools and jobs. It has much support. However, after approval by the Planning Commission, the project was appealed. The City Council is due to review the appeal on May 28th.

In addition to urging the City Council to deny the appeal, we want to remind them that months of delay and expense added to the project by a process heavily reliant on NIMBY complaints is unacceptable. This project meets local and state requirements and should move forward quickly.

Add your own housing story and why you support the project, it can be included in the petition!

We are writing in support of the proposed mixed-use infill housing project at 1130 Mission St, also known as the Food Bin project. We urge a denial of the appeal and your support to move this project forward.

We applaud the owners of the Food Bin for taking a stand during our housing crisis, and choosing to make improvements on their own land to add 59 homes to our community. This mix of SROs and 1-bedrooms are much-needed for individuals, seniors, and young couples to live in Santa Cruz. We are pleased the project includes a new space for the Food Bin and Herb Room as well.

This project is a great example of sustainable growth. It is located along Mission St, a major transportation corridor that is close to services, schools and jobs. We appreciate that state law is being used locally to prioritize housing people over cars and creating more housing rather than more parking. As METRO continues to expand service it will only become more convenient for future residents.

We are concerned that the process to build this project has resulted in a 5 month delay, with over $200K of requested changes to a project approved in January that meets local and state requirements. We believe the owner has made significant efforts to accommodate neighborhood concerns.

We wholeheartedly support this project.
