Grove Street is one of the most dangerous streets in Montclair, with dozens of crashes just in the past few years. We need traffic calming measures to make Grove Street a space where all users can feel safe.

Traffic calming can take many forms, and Grove Street could benefit from many of them, including bumpouts, lane narrowing, even planting trees But, evidence shows that adding a protected bike lane is among the most effective ways to slow down traffic and make streets safer.

Creating a protected bike lane along Grove would bring other benefits to the town, including , providing access to train stations, schools, and the the future grocery store at Lackawanna Plaza.

Promoting biking also brings economic benefits, promotes public health, increases community, and–because half of Montclair’s greenhouse gas emissions are from vehicles–is one of the best ways to address the ongoing climate crisis.

We can redesign Grove Street into the Grove Street Greenway, a transportation corridor which is open and usable by all, equally -- cars, bikes, and pedestrians. We can have a Grove Street which makes connections, builds community, and fosters beauty and sustainability.

As Montclair residents who live on and near Grove Street, we call on the town council to support and implement a bike lane and other traffic calming measures along Grove Street.

Grove Street is one of the most dangerous streets in Montclair, according to the town's own data. While the town and county have reduced the speed limit, that is not enough. A redesign of the street, with a variety of traffic calming measures, is necessary to reduce speeds and reduce injuries and crashes.

Bike lanes have been shown to have a big impact on slowing down traffic. Plus, bike lanes down Grove Street would connect the length of Montclair with the Bay Street Station, multiple schools, the new Essex Greenway, and the grocery store which is expected to go in at Lackawanna Plaza.

For all these reasons, we ask that you adopt a plan to build a bike lane and install other traffic calming measures along Grove Street.
