SUPPORT THE MEMBERS OF UNITE HERE! LOCAL 23 ONBOARD SERVICE WORKERS

Amtrak

Local 23 has approximately 500 Members working on AMTRAK Trains across the Country. The majority are in Chicago, Washington DC, and New Orleans. At these locations the lack of adequate staffing has put Employees in a position to fail.  One person can’t do counter service, table service, and prepare meals for a three-to-four-day TRAIN trip. One person trying to work two full sleeping cars and in some cases on opposite ends of the Train, combined with serving meals, is completely overwhelming. To expect an Employee to work and sleep in a chair without a crew room shows a lack of respect for the On Board Service worker.

We all have this in common: 2020 was an unforgettable year. It was full of changes, challenges, and conflict at home and at work. The mental and emotional fatigue of working in transportation was and is tremendous. In this highly stressful environment On Board Service personnel had and have legitimate concern for their personal health and welfare. Many employees will tell you about verbal abuse from passengers just for asking them to wear a mask. But America’s Railroad continued to run through the pandemic. It was the employees working on trains every day that made it happen.

On behalf of those employees, I ask for your support to remind AMTRAK: it’s the Employees that work on these trains that are the face of the company. It’s these Employees that are serving America, it was AMTRAK’s former President and CEO Joseph Boardman who coined the phrase, “America’s Railroad.” He was a leader that would stop to talk to any and all employees treating all workers with respect for the role they played in the success of AMTRAK.

AMTRAK’s role is expanding nationally in infrastructure and growth. Our Nation’s Commander and Chief, The Honorable President Joseph Biden, has always valued the workers of America and that includes Amtrak On Board Service workers who are the frontline and part of the fabric of America’s National Railroad Passenger Corporation. “They Matter,” and are an integral part of the economic engine that drives OUR Country forward.
