Support the PA Broadcast Freemarket Agreement Act

Your Signature Will Protect Pennsylvania Broadcasters From Unfair Contracts
People who work in Pennsylvania radio and television programs should enjoy the same freedoms as their employers: the ability to compete on the open market and reap the revenue gains that come from being a high performer.
Unfortunately, noncompete clauses trap broadcast employees, forcing them to either accept lower wages than they deserve or leave the communities they call home. SB 142, the Broadcast Freemarket Agreement Act, would do for Pennsylvania what 15 states have already done and prohibit the enforcement of noncompete clauses in broadcast employment agreements.
Opponents of SB 142 will do everything they can to kill the bill either by stopping the vote or adding so many amendments that it loses support.
Request Majority Leader Joe Pittman schedule a “clean vote” in the Pennsylvania State Senate by signing SAG-AFTRA’s open letter. The votes are there – it’s time to vote.

Supporting SB 142, the Broadcast Freemarket Agreement Act, would mean representing what Pennsylvanians value most — freedom, independence and the ability for individuals to achieve their dreams.
Competition is what allows greatness to rise to the top. Noncompete clauses are inherently anti-competitive, preventing workers from taking advantage of available opportunities.
As a voter in Pennsylvania, the state responsible for both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, we should oppose these restrictive clauses and pass SB 142 to keep our broadcast industry and its employees free to pursue the prosperity they deserve.
Yes, we’re aware there will be those who argue that non-competes protect trade secrets. But state law already protects those interests. Ultimately non-competes only serve employers who want to keep wages low instead of improving their business practices.
In addition to the 10 states that already prohibit non-competes, non-competes are not enforceable in California, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Oregon. Those states have thriving broadcast markets, so clearly laws like SB 142 have no negative impact on the industry.
This is a much-needed bill. It would incentivize better broadcast business practices and reward broadcast employees who do good work.
Keeping freedom in the employment market is essential for aligning the industry with our state’s core ideals.
Please schedule the vote today. I look forward to celebrating the uncomplicated passage of SB 142.
Thank you.
