Teamsters Against ICE: Demand the IBT Leadership Stand Against State Violence!

Petition to Teamsters Leadership

We, the undersigned Teamsters and supporters of the union movement, demand that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters leadership:

  1. Condemn the state executions of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE and CBP agents.
  2. Organize for an end to any contracts with ICE, including the ICE/UPS contract.
  3. Defend members who refuse to comply with ICE operations on the job.
  4. Hold local meetings, open to all membership in person and on Zoom, to discuss the ongoing state terror against the working class, and the potential use of political strikes to fight back.
  5. Defend the people's right to bear arms, as is protected by the Second Amendment.
  6. Oppose the spread of the dystopian surveillance technology developed by Palantir and other companies for US federal agencies, which is being used on all people regardless of immigration status and is a test run for fascist rule in the US.
  7. Call for the abolition of ICE, a brutal and anonymous federal police force. The first step is its immediate removal from US cities. ICE is a new and disturbing outgrowth of the state and a product of the so-called “War on Terror.” ICE is not just a threat to immigrants, but to all workers in the US.

ICE is terrorizing people across the country. Its masked agents have beaten and arrested people regardless of immigration status, and brutally executed protesters like Renee Good and Alex Pretti with the absurd justification that they were “domestic terrorists.” Alongside them, ICE murdered 32 people last year, the highest number since 2004, and just this month, ICE has killed 6 other people.

On top of this, the government is using this campaign to rapidly strip away our limited civil rights. The Department of Homeland Security has been testing surveillance technology, involuntary face tracking, and Israeli spyware on American streets. The murder of protestors is a clear signal that the First Amendment is on the chopping block. The Second Amendment right to bear arms is being called into question as the federal government blames Alex Pretti’s execution on him legally carrying a gun. And Fourth Amendment protections are being stripped away as the Supreme Court recently ruled that police can enter someone’s home without a warrant, and the leaked ICE memos say that agents don’t need a judicial warrant to enter homes.

The Teamsters union leadership’s silence in the face of these attacks on the working class has been deafening. They have done nothing to take a stand and support the countless workers who have been harassed, kidnapped, deported, shot, and murdered in recent months. In fact, in response to the increasing ICE violence, IBT General President Sean O’Brien disgustingly defended ICE and blamed the situation on a lack of deportations under previous presidents, and has called immigrants “illegal aliens” and “criminals”.

It’s our responsibility as workers in one of the largest unions in the country to take a stand against this intensifying state violence being carried out on the people. We need to get organized as the working class to fight, and prepare ourselves to use one of our most powerful weapons: the strike. The political strike and the general strike were made illegal by labor laws which benefit the bosses, the state, and union leadership, and we have been propagandized to believe that workers shouldn't use strikes to take action on issues beyond our wages and working conditions. This is a deadly lie and we need to break from it.

We have to use our leverage as unions to take an independent stand for the working class, to defend the oppressed, and fight our exploiters across the whole society. We can't look to the Democrats or the Republicans, two heads of the same snake, to address these issues. All they will do is lead us in circles while taking turns strengthening the state, increasing censorship and repression, and making us poorer.

We refuse to accept the IBT leadership’s slogan “Teamsters vs Everybody.” This is a trick to divide us up from the rest of the working class, while O'Brien cuts backroom deals with figures like Trump. We say instead:

Working Class vs Ruling Class! Which side are you on?

We encourage Teamsters members to collect signatures from coworkers on this petition and to raise these demands at their local unions.
