People’s Action builds the power of poor and working people in urban, rural, and suburban areas to win change through issue fights and elections. We are a national network of 38 state and local grassroots power-building organizations in 28 states–united in the work of building power with people to fight for the dignity and justice they deserve.

Our membership includes the Mental Health Justice team of ONE Northside, our local affiliate committed to ensuring equitable healthcare access to our community. We represent over 5,000 people across the Northside of Chicago united in our shared values of justice and equity for all.

Our beloved Illinois community member, Erin Hoffman, went in for a routine primary care visit last year and got a preventative blood test done, ordered by her doctor. A few months later, Erin got a bill from her doctor for $999 for her blood work after her insurer, Ambetter, failed to pay it. Ambetter claimed the test was not "in-network" even though Erin had carefully double checked to make sure that her doctor and hospital were covered by Ambetter.

After 4 months of red tape, hang ups, and hours on hold, Erin still doesn't have answers about her bill and is getting final notices for her bill. This is not right. Ambetter is prioritizing their profits over the care Erin needs.

We demand that Ambetter cover the full cost of Erin's bill.
