Tell Arlington County Board to Implement a Nakba Resolution
ARLINGTON COUNTY BOARD: LIBBY GARVEY, CHAIR; TAKIS P. KARANTONIS, VICE-CHAIR; MATT DE FERRANTI, MEMBER; MAUREEN COFFEY, MEMBER; AND SUSAN CUNNINGHAM, MEMBER
May 15, 2024 is the 76th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba when Israelis expelled over 800,000 Palestinians from their homes and lands in Acre, Haifa, Jaffa, Jerusalem—and over 500 Palestinian towns and villages. The Nakba means catastrophe in Arabic. Denying the Nakba is denying the human rights of the Palestinians.
The Palestinians were the majority population in Palestine and owned 94% of the land that became the State of Israel in 1948. The Israelis continue to prevent the Palestinians from returning to their homes and lands in violation of international law. Imagine being driven from your homeland, losing all your possessions, and becoming a refugee for 75 years—separated from your family and everything you love, and demonized for struggling to achieve your human rights.
Northern Virginia has one of the highest concentrations of Arab Americans in the country and many of them are Palestinian Americans. They sought refuge in the United States after being forced from Palestine, including in Arlington County, Virginia. Most Arab Americans have been affected in some way by the Nakba—especially if they have families in Palestine, Israel, and almost anywhere in the Middle East or dispersed throughout the world.
We ask Arlington County to commemorate the Nakba because the population of Arlington County is multicultural, educated, and compassionate—and they are concerned about Palestinians and the Holy Land. We ask Arlington County to recognize the humanity of the Palestinians by commemorating the 75th year of their pain and sorrow and acknowledging Palestinian Americans struggle to achieve their inalienable human rights.
It is always the right thing to acknowledge other peoples’ suffering and loss. And it is always the right thing to be on the side of international law and human rights.
Arlington County should commemorate the Palestinian Nakba of 1948 as requested by Palestinian Americans for Arlington County and human rights advocates.~~~
