Tell Bank of America and SunTrust to stop funding private prisons!
Bank of America CEO Brian T. Moynihan and SunTrust CEO William H. Rogers Jr.
CoreCivic and GEO Group earn billions of dollars operating prisons, jails, and immigration detention centers. Those detention centers are used to detain immigrant families and separate parents from their children. Bank of America and SunTrust help finance these private prison companies and are complicit in the suffering of too many families. Certain politicians, government agencies, and corporations are rigging the rules of our justice system to criminalize Black people, immigrants, and poor folks at disproportionately high rates, while banks, private prisons and lobbyists enrich themselves in pursuit of even more people to detain and jail.
It’s time to unite and say, “Enough is enough!”
Many of you signed our previous petition calling on Wells Fargo and JP Morgan to stop financing private prisons. Because of our collective efforts with a broad coalition of groups across the country, both banks have agreed to sever ties with the private prison industry!
Now it’s time to demand that Bank of America and SunTrust get out of the cruelty business. Sign our petition to tell Bank of America and SunTrust to stop financing private prison companies!

We are outraged by Bank of America and SunTrust's major roles in financing private prisons. The private prison industry is detaining over 70 percent of immigrants in ICE custody and are complicit in the epidemic of mass incarceration that targets and devastates communities of color. [1] Research shows that many private prisons have documented histories of human rights abuses. [2]
Private prison companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group depend on funding from banks like yours to conduct their day-to-day business operations, finance new facilities, and acquire smaller companies. [3] A 2019 analysis of GEO Group and CoreCivic’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) 2018 filings, show that Bank of America and SunTrust have had a major role in financing these private prison companies. [4] In doing so, Bank of America and SunTrust are complicit in and profiting from mass incarceration and the criminalization of immigration. [5,6]
We demand that you immediately stop financing private prisons.
