We reject the proposed across the board budget cuts that include the Department of Education. If these cuts occur, they will directly harm borrowers and their families. The reality is that more than 40 million Americans are saddled with a staggering $1.7 trillion of student loan debt. The impending threat of extreme budget cuts, coinciding with millions of individuals resuming loan payments after a 3.5-year pause, is nothing short of catastrophic. Lawmakers must stop these draconian cuts.

Even before the pandemic, dealing with the complicated student loan system was frustrating and confusing for many borrowers. Now, with the economic impact of the pandemic still lingering, the Department of Education's role of helping borrowers is even more critical. It’s exactly the wrong time for our leaders to inflict drastic cuts to the departments that help borrowers.
