Unionized staff at EdSource, the largest education newsroom in California, have voted unanimously to authorize a strike in protest of unilateral changes to healthcare benefits and management’s lack of progress toward a fair contract.

EdSource has:

• Changed our health benefits unilaterally — during a period of status quo —, effectively raising our copays and deductibles, and failed to bargain over the changes with the Guild.

• Denied cost of living raises that match how much prices go up.

• Opposed adequate sick time for employees to take care of ourselves and our family

• Rejected strong leave of absence policies, leaving journalists unaware or uninformed of our options and depriving us of sufficient time to bond with newborns or care for ill parents.

• Insisted on weak legal protections that put both reporters and sources at risk

• Ignored proposals to ensure that artificial intelligence is not deployed in a way that affects the integrity of our journalism
