Tell Elected Officials to Take Action on PFAS in 2025

Governor Hochul, Senator Stewart-Cousins, Speaker Heastie

Given the uncertainty of the political landscape, we know some people are feeling unsure about how they can contribute meaningfully to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the future.

Now more than ever, it is important that New York State takes the lead in protecting its people from toxic chemicals. We cannot rely solely on the federal government to secure protections for public and environmental health. We need our state legislature to pass bills that will restrict the use of toxic chemicals in our products.

Research shows that chemicals like formaldehyde, arsenic, heavy metals, asbestos, and especially toxic forever chemicals, i.e., PFAS, contribute to reproductive challenges, birth defects, and cancer. These chemicals are in some of our personal care products, menstrual products, cosmetics, ski wax, dental floss, cookware, and architectural paint. Although there are safer options on the market, we believe that safe options should be the standard and a right for all of us - there is no reason to keep these dangerous products on our shelves

Sign this petition to urge the legislature to take quick action in 2025 to pass legislation that will get rid of toxic chemicals in our products.

To protect our health.

To protect the environment.

To protect our futures.

Dear Governor Hochul, Senator Stewart-Cousins and Assemblymember Heastie,

The next four years are expected to be tumultuous, and many New Yorkers are concerned about the impacts the environment, and inevitably our health, will face due to actions taken on the federal level.

In 2025, it is urgent that you pass legislation to protect New Yorkers from toxic chemicals that continue to threaten our existence.

As you know, PFAS chemicals are associated with serious health risks like cancer and developmental issues in children – which is bad because a CDC study estimates that 98% of people living in the US have PFAS in their bodies. Other dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde, arsenic, heavy metals, and asbestos have also been linked to hormonal disruptions, reproductive challenges, and cancer.

New York needs to reestablish itself as an environmental leader by restricting these harmful chemicals from our personal care products, menstrual products, cosmetics and other everyday products such as ski wax, dental floss, cookware, and architectural paint.

This is why we are urging you to swiftly pass legislation in 2025 that will ban these chemicals from our products, so that consumers can be assured that the products on their shelves will not impair their health.

New York has already passed a number of bills cracking down on PFAS, including phasing out PFAS in firefighting foam and paper-based food packaging, and most recently banning it in apparel and carpets. But we can’t stop there.

We are calling on you to do even more to protect New Yorkers from toxics by continuing the crackdown on PFAS and other dangerous chemicals as soon as the legislative session begins.
