Tell Facebook: Restore the Livestream of the Birthright Walkoff and Palestinian Stories

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg

We just found out that Facebook removed a livestream posted by Hallie Berkson-Gold — under her profile Hal Rose — one of the 8 Birthright participants who walked off their trip on July 15. The viral, two-hour long livestream had been watched by over 160,000 people and depicted the moment of their walkoff as well as lengthy conversations with the Sumarins, a Palestinian family under threat of eviction in East Jerusalem.

Facebook has a long, documented history of bowing down to the right-wing Israel lobby by suppressing posts by and about Palestinian activists and others critical of the Israeli government and the Occupation. This act is part of that pattern of corporate power being used to prop up authoritarian governments.

Both Himnuta (a subsidiary of the Jewish National Fund) and Elad (a settler organization, whose mission is to “Judaize” East Jerusalem by evicting Palestinian families) have been waging an intense legal battle for nearly three decades to force the Sumarins out of their home so their land can be used for illegal settlements. One of the only ways families like the Sumarins can resist the power of the settler movement is through public pressure, and this video was an important way for them to reach a worldwide audience with the story of how the Occupation is harming their family.

Sign this petition and demand that Facebook restore Hallie’s livestream and commit to an immediate cessation of its policy of removing content from Palestinian activists and other critics of the Israeli Occupation.
