Tell Google: Let schools turn off AI Overviews without losing Search

Google

Google is giving schools an ultimatum: accept AI Overviews in front of their K-12 students, or lose access to Google Search entirely.

As reported by The Verge on November 3, 2026, Google told the New York Times that school accounts whose administrators disable its AI features will lose Search completely. Administrators will not get an option to turn off AI Overviews on their own. And Google's own help pages say AI Overviews "can't be turned off" for anyone.

We don't think that's a real choice. Search is where students learn to find, read, and evaluate sources, the foundation of digital literacy. We believe Google is holding it hostage: accept unsupervised AI in front of students, or lose the tool they use to learn how the internet works.

Sign to tell Google: give schools a real toggle for AI Overviews, and give every user a way to turn them off. Don't make educators choose between unsupervised AI and no search at all.

To Google:

Your own help pages say AI Overviews are a core Search feature that "can't be turned off." And as reported by The Verge on November 3, 2026, Google told the New York Times that K-12 school accounts which disable its AI features will lose access to Google Search entirely, with no option to turn off AI Overviews alone.

We, the undersigned, demand that Google:

1. Give schools and Google Workspace for Education administrators a way to turn off AI Overviews without losing access to Search.
2. Give every Search user a setting to turn AI Overviews off.
3. Stop showing AI Overviews to K-12 students whose schools have not opted in.

We believe students build research skills by working through real sources, not by having answers handed to them by AI. Digital literacy should not be leverage for an AI push. Give schools a real choice.
