We, constituents of Arizona's 9th congressional district, call on our Representative Greg Stanton to act on his stated belief that healthcare is a right and immediately cosponsor the only legislation that will guarantee it to all Americans: H.R. 1976, the Medicare for All Act of 2021.

The time for Medicare for All is now.

Our nation spends more than twice as much per person on healthcare as other countries, and yet tens of millions of Americans still can’t get the care they need. At the same time, corporations in the insurance, pharmaceutical, and hospital industries continue to make billions of dollars in profits while costs increase unchecked. Our profit-driven health care system makes a few incredibly wealthy while leaving so many American families, especially in communities of color, to suffer and die simply because they can't afford the care they need in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world. In 1966, Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane." 54 years later, we must finally join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee healthcare to all of our people as a right.

A national Medicare for All, single-payer system is the only solution that will meet the scale of the crisis we face and guarantee comprehensive, high-quality care for all at a lower cost than we currently pay.

We cannot wait. Even before the COVID 19 catastrophe, there were 83,110 uninsured Arizonans in congressional district 9. Especially as we struggle to finally end this devastating once-in-a-century pandemic, America needs a universal Medicare for All system that leaves no one out. And Americans want Medicare for All. The majority of Americans and the vast majority of Democrats in Arizona and nationwide support Medicare for All. The majority of Rep. Stanton's Democratic colleagues in the House are co-sponsors of the Medicare for All Act of 2021, HR1976.

Greg Stanton says that he believes that healthcare is a human right, but his actions do not show it. After four meetings with constituents sharing the awful toll of our for-profit health insurance system and educating him and his staff about Medicare for All as a solution, he still has not decided to cosponsor the Medicare for All Act. Enough. It is time for Rep. Stanton to make a choice. If he wants to be seen as a champion of healthcare for all, he must support a health care system based on the needs of the American people, not the profits and CEO salaries of a very few.

When the constituent signatures for this petition have been gathered, it will be presented to Rep. Stanton. All signers of the petition will be notified and offered the opportunity to participate in the public presentation of the petition, as the public health considerations at the time permit.
