Tell Greyhound: Get Border Patrol Off Your Buses
Greyhound Lines, Inc.
For years Greyhound has been working with Border Patrol by allowing agents to get on buses and ask passengers for their documents. Under the Trump administration, this activity has increased. Border Patrol agents were recorded boarding a bus and making arrests at a Greyhound station in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and all around the United States as the rights of immigrants constantly get undermined.
Recently the Florida Immigrant Coalition put out a Travel Advisory warning undocumented immigrants not to ride Greyhound buses due to the real risk of being detained and deported if Border Patrol gets on the buses. Border Patrol claims that because Fort Lauderdale is a coastal city, they have the right to ask anyone for identification and arrest people if they have reason to believe they are undocumented. This is a very dangerous precedent, because it means that under a Trump administration, Border Patrol has jurisdiction not just along the Northern and Southern Border, but all along the East and West Coast. However, all those in the United States including private companies like Greyhound have the right under the fourth amendment of the Constitution to reject such activities by federal agents.
As undocumented immigrants cannot get drivers licenses in most states, buses are the only way to be able to travel longer distances to be able to work, and visit families.
Greyhound does NOT need to collaborate with Border Patrol in this way. Sign the petition below to demand Greyhound stop detentions and deportations on their buses, and join us as we take on this fight to protect the constitutional rights of all who reside in this country including immigrants
Note: **All citizens have the right to refuse to show identification if ICE or Border Patrol asks. We are calling for allies to stand in solidarity with the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US, by refusing to show identification on any buses or trains, to protect undocumented riders. If you would like to learn more about your rights as an ally and what you can do to protect others, text "Greyhound" to 41411***
