ICE is trying to deport our friend Garfield Green.

Garfield has tirelessly organized from within detention to address poor conditions, lack of medical care, and violations of standards. He was instrumental in connecting people in detention at Pulaski County Jail in Southern Illinois with legal and community advocates during the closing of that detention center. Due to his tremendous efforts, advocates were able to identify and attempt to connect the people detained there with support. Since the closing and his transfer, he has continued his efforts to connect others in detention with community support.

Garfield has not been able to receive proper fitting of his prosthetic leg while in detention, so he is reliant on a wheelchair. He also has medical conditions such as diabetes that are very difficult to manage in detention. He has had difficulty obtaining prompt and appropriate medical care for these conditions and for other injuries suffered in detention. He also has experienced abuse and retaliation for standing up for his rights.

His wife, teenage daughter, and young son have suffered financial hardship and emotional distress during their separation. Garfield is a loving father and he and his family long to be reunited. He has lived in the US for 30 years and always worked hard to support his family. He has even worked on construction projects on the Statue of Liberty! He has many friends, co-workers, and community members who are also waiting to welcome him home.

It is past time for Garfield to be home with his family and his community!

We call for ICE to use their discretional authority to release Garfield Green A#095529132 and allow him to stay in the U.S.

He has lived here for 30 years. His U.S. citizen wife and children need him—they have experienced financial hardship and extreme emotional distress during his detention. They would suffer greatly if he were deported. Garfield relies on a wheelchair and should be released to receive proper support and care for his disability and diabetes.

Garfield has consistently demonstrated his good character by working to connect others in detention with resources and community support. He deeply regrets his past mistakes and has fully served his time. He deserves a second chance to serve his family and community again as he always has.

It is time for Garfield to come home to his family and his community instead of suffering the double punishment of deportation!
