Over 200 Lavish Roots food service workers prepare and serve meals for Meta employees in Bellevue and Redmond, Washington. They play a critical role in creating the “at work experience” that Meta’s tech employees have come to expect.

But while Meta grows increasingly larger and richer, the cafeteria workers who feed Meta employees are struggling. The lowest wage for a cafeteria worker at Meta is just $21.50 per hour. Meanwhile, median rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the Seattle area is $2,023 and climbing. Workers must also pay out of pocket for high-cost, high-deductible health insurance that costs as much as $1,520 per month for family coverage.

Elsewhere in the Seattle area, unionized tech food service workers on Google, Microsoft, and a second Meta campus have access to free, quality health care benefits.  The unionized food service employees at Microsoft and Google are paid a minimum of $27.50 per hour.

Workers for Lavish Roots at Meta are organizing a union because they deserve the same! Both Lavish Roots and Meta must remain neutral and respect workers’ right to organize.

These workers are a vital part of the Meta campus and are our neighbors and community members too. For this reason, we also call on Meta to use its advocacy and vast resources to support the rights of immigrant, queer and trans communities in our region.
