Tell Meta: Stop Targeting Children
Meta
The number of children who have access to social media platforms is growing rapidly. According to recent data, 39% of children sign up for their first social media account between the ages of 10 and 12.
Now, thirty-three US states are joining together to sue Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, alleging that the social media giant is harmful to children's mental health.
The lawsuit claims that Meta develops algorithms intended to keep users on the platform for as long as possible, making it harder for children to disengage.
“Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens. Its motive is profit, and in seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its social media platforms,” the complaint from the 33 states says.
Our children need to be protected, rather than used for profit and exploited when it comes to internet usage and safety.
