Tell Nevada County to Divest from Destruction. Adopt an Socially and Ethically Responsible Investment Policy

Nevada County Residents

Urge Nevada County to adopt a Socially and Ethically Responsible Investment Policy.

Reinvest in Nevada County, Divest from Destruction.

Our public tax dollars are invested using a policy that prioritizes fiscal profits but does not include any guidelines for avoiding human rights abuses, environmental devastations, utilization of slave or child labor, weapons manufacturing, private prisons or protection of worker health and safety. The county’s current investment policy is based solely on considerations of "safety, liquidity and yield.”

We are asking the county to add “social responsibility and ethical behavior” to the list, which would result in the county ceasing investments in entities that violate international human rights laws and make our county complicit in such abuses.

In Nevada county’s 336 million dollar investment portfolio:

Chevron USA $1 million ( Chevron USA operates natural gas oil fields off the coast of Gaza and supplies 70% of Israel's power, which is critical to its occupation, prisons and illegal settlements in the West Bank.)

Exxon-Mobil $2 million (countless environmental devastations and climate diasters)

Amazon $1 million (contracts with ICE, violates workers rights)

Apple $4 million (exploitative labor practices in manufacturing & utilizes slave and child labor in material extraction)

Walmart $1 million (notorious for violating worker rights)

Google $2 million (Makes AI weapons and found guilty of surveilling its users)

We are asking our county to follow the example of Alameda County, the City of Eureka, the City of Richmond and other local governments across the nation in adopting and applying ethical policies, investment policies and divestment from destructive and exploitative practices. Please add your (or your organization’s) name to the petition on the next page, and – important! – indicate your Supervisorial District.

Dear Supervisor __________,
I'm a resident in your district. How our public funds (my tax dollars) are invested is important. The county's investment policy does not contain any mention of “social responsibility and ethical behavior” to the list, which would result in the county ceasing investments in entities that violate international human rights laws and make our county complicit in such abuses.
Please implement a policy that restricts investments in entities that are exploitive and destructive.
