Tell Pres. Biden: Use Your Pardon Power for Justice

President Biden

President Biden recently pardoned his son, Hunter, a move that underscores the immense power of the presidential pardon. But this power must also be used to correct systemic injustices that impact countless Americans—especially those who have been wrongfully or excessively punished by the federal justice system.

On December 12, Pres. Biden took a big step in the right direction by commuting roughly 1,500 sentences and pardoning 39 people. It was the biggest single day act of clemency in United States history, and an important down payment on what he can and should do over the next few weeks.

In a recent letter to President Biden, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and other lawmakers urged him to use his pardon power for justice. They called on him to "reunite families, address longstanding injustices in our legal system, and set our nation on the path toward ending mass incarceration."

We’re joining Rep. Pressley’s powerful call for justice by petitioning Pres. Biden to issue pardons to the “elderly and chronically ill, those on death row, people with unjustified sentencing disparities, and women who were punished for defending themselves against their abusers.”

Meanwhile, Trump is reportedly planning to pardon those who attacked the Capitol on January 6—people who tried to undermine our democracy. In contrast, there are thousands of individuals far more deserving of clemency—people who were punished unjustly and who deserve a second chance.

President Biden has the opportunity to deliver meaningful justice and live up to his promise of addressing racial inequities in the criminal justice system.

We call on President Biden to expand his use of clemency and pardon those who have been unjustly imprisoned or burdened with federal convictions. Justice requires more than words; it requires bold action to undo the harms of mass incarceration and discriminatory sentencing policies.

Sign this petition to urge President Biden to use his pardon power to deliver justice to those who need it most. Let's ensure clemency is a tool for equity, not just a privilege for the powerful.
