Tell Public Officials: Treat the Swan Island Bridge Like the Emergency It Is

Dozens of families on Swan Island, part of Grosse Ile Township, recently learned that the weight limit on the only bridge to their homes had been reduced from 33 tons to just 3 tons following a routine inspection.
Three tons is less than many empty full-sized pickup trucks.
The result is immediate and severe. Garbage trucks, many delivery vehicles, contractors, and other essential services can no longer legally cross the bridge. Residents have been forced to pick up their mail, packages, groceries, and trash elsewhere, while many understandably have questions about emergency access if every second counts.
We appreciate the heroic work Grosse Ile Township officials and staff are doing to help residents navigate this unexpected situation. But this should never become normal.
Residents deserve infrastructure that is maintained proactively, clear communication when problems arise, and an urgent response when access to people's homes is suddenly affected.
This is not just a Swan Island issue.
Nearly 10,000 residents rely on bridges every day to reach homes, schools, businesses, healthcare, and emergency services throughout Grosse Ile. Communities across Wayne County face similar infrastructure challenges. The Swan Island Bridge reminds us that deferred maintenance and poor communication can quickly become a public safety issue.
We respectfully call on Wayne County, along with our state and federal representatives, to:
- Prioritize a timely repair or replacement plan for the Swan Island Bridge.
- Provide clear, frequent, and transparent communication to residents throughout the process.
- Work with Grosse Ile Township to minimize disruptions to essential services while repairs are underway.
- Prioritize long-term investment in critical bridge infrastructure so communities are not placed in similar situations in the future.
