Tell State Legislators to Pass HB1084 - Give MCPS Calendar Flexibility!

Maryland State Legislators

The Maryland State Board of Education denied MCPS's petition to waive four (4) instructional days due to a winter storm in January 2026. This requires MCPS to extend the school year to June 25, 2026.

Educators know that these days will not be productive and many students will be absent from class. It could cost the district nearly $8 million to cover these additional days.

Sign this petition to let state legislators know that you are advocating for state legislation that provides MCPS calendar flexibility and does not require costly additional duty days that do not contribute to student learning or achievement.

Please support the passage of a local bill (HB 1084) that provides Montgomery County Public Schools the flexibility, when making up for emergency closures, to meet required instructional time of either 180 instructional days or 1,080 instructional hours.

Due to the recent decision by the Maryland State Board of Education, MCPS is required to add four (4) additional days to the school year. As educators, we know that attendance is sparse on these makeup days, and they are not constructive learning days. Additionally, it would cost Montgomery County taxpayers almost $2 million per day to cover expenses related to these makeup days – money we cannot afford to waste.

Help us prevent expensive, unnecessary fixes that neither contribute to student learning nor enrichment. Please support HB1084!

Thank you!
