Tell The Berkeley City Council: Adopt a Resolution Calling for the Immediate Release of Mahmoud Khalil

The Berkeley City Council

The illegal arrest of former Columbia graduate student and legal resident, Mahmoud Khalil, for participating in protests against the Israeli bombing of Gaza is a direct violation of the First Amendment. It's also a sign that more political repression is yet to be attempted under the current Trump administration.

As such, it is imperative that we encourage our local government to condemn these acts of state sanctioned violence. Please sign this petition urging the Berkeley City Council to adopt a resolution that calls for the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil.

RESOLUTION ON THE ABDUCTION OF MAHMOUD KHALIL
for presentation to the Berkeley City Council

Whereas, Mahmoud Khalil, a leader in the protests against Israeli bombing of Gaza that have taken place at Columbia University, has not been accused of any acts of violence or incitement to violence; and

Whereas, Mahmoud Khalil is a legal permanent resident of the United States, holding a Green Card, and is married to an U.S. citizen; and

Whereas, His illegal arrest, with the stated intention of illegally deporting him, by the Trump Administration, is a fundamental violation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution;

Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Berkeley City Council declares its opposition to the arrest of Khalil and calls for his immediate release; and

Be It Further Resolved, that this Resolution be communicated to Representative Lateefah Simon, Senators Padilla and Schiff, the City Councils of other East Bay Cities, and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors with a request for their concurrence.
