We the undersigned call upon the UN to take immediate action to evacuate Hady*, a former employee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and renowned Afghan translator, as well as his family, to a safe country immediately.

Hady, even under the most dire of circumstances, has never abandoned his work as a humanitarian translator. Although he is living in hiding, he currently serves as a translator at Respond Crisis Translation, a frontline language justice organization operating globally.

Hady’s case has been pending with the UN for over a decade, and he is in imminent danger of capture and death alongside his wife and five children, including a newborn baby. Given his 11 years of employment by the UN and the perceived ties he has to the United States government and military, he is at heightened risk of persecution and torture, the same tragic fate that has already claimed the lives of hundreds of UN and US-employed translators just like him.

We are urging the UN to immediately:

• Expedite his case: evacuate Hady and his family to a country where they will be safe from persecution.

• Issue UNHCR refugee identification cards to Hady and his family, because the lack thereof has stripped them of any form of mobility whatsoever.

• Create and execute on an immediate resettlement plan for all Afghan translators living in hiding or in exile.

The UN is responsible for any harm brought to Hady and his family. UN leadership, act now.
