We the undersigned call upon the UN to take immediate action to evacuate Hady*, a former employee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and renowned Afghan translator, as well as his family, to a safe country immediately.

Due to escalating threats against Hady's life, we are urging the UN to immediately:

• Expedite his case: refer Hady’s case for URGENT resettlement so he can evacuate as quickly as possible with his family before it’s too late.

• Create and execute on an immediate resettlement plan for all Afghan translators living in hiding or in exile.

Hady, even under the most dire of circumstances, has never abandoned his work as a humanitarian translator. Although he is living in hiding, he currently serves as a translator at Respond Crisis Translation, a frontline language justice organization operating globally.

Hady has reached a critical point because the targeting against him has intensified. Just two weeks ago, he was threatened at gunpoint while on his way to the pharmacy to retrieve medications that his wife relies on to remain alive. He escaped his attackers only narrowly and sustained severe injuries. Because the attacks on his life are intensifying daily, combined with the fact that his wife has a life threatening medical condition, I am requesting that the UNHCR mark Hady’s case as urgent in order to evacuate him to safety immediately.

Hady’s case was pending with the UN for over a decade, and he is in imminent danger of capture and death alongside his wife and five children, including a newborn baby. Given his 11 years of employment by the UN and the perceived ties he has to the United States government and military, he is at heightened risk of persecution and torture, the same tragic fate that has already claimed the lives of hundreds of UN and US-employed translators just like him.

As long as Hady is alive, there is still time. But the threats and attacks against Hady and his family are intensifying each day. UN leadership, act now before it is too late.
