Tell the University of Washington to Support Greenwood Mushrooms Farm Workers
University of Washington

Farm workers at Greenwood Mushrooms Sunnyside, formerly known as Ostrom Mushrooms, have faced dangerous workplace conditions and unfair treatment from management for years. In 2022, these workers decided to stand up for their rights and voted to form a union with United Farm Workers. But previous management refused to recognize the union and their demands, and new farm ownership continues to suppress worker rights and their struggle for a union
Wholesale distributors, retailers, and the University of Washington continue to buy and sell from Greenwood Mushrooms Sunnyside. These non-union mushrooms are the product of exploitation and abuse by the hands of management previously at Ostrom and now at Greenwood. In selling these mushrooms to their student body at both District Market locations and in serving them at their dining halls, the University of Washington is complicit in ignoring the rights of farm workers. We can no longer stand by and watch this transpire. The university must do what is in their power to hold the farm accountable.
We ask the University of Washington to support the mushroom workers in Sunnyside who voted to be part of the United Farm Workers Union.
We ask the university to tell its distributor, Charlie’s Produce, to stop purchasing mushrooms from Greenwood Mushrooms Sunnyside until the company negotiates a contract for fair wages and safe working conditions with the UFW.
