Tell the UVA Board of Visitors to Protect Gender Affirming Health Care

boardofvisitors@virginia.edu

On Friday, the Board of Visitors will host a special meeting to discuss the future of healthcare for Trans* youth in the UVA Health system. AG Miyares and UVA’s decision last month to prematurely comply with Trump’s executive order barring youth under 19 from accessing gender-affirming care is incredibly dangerous and harmful to Trans* people and their loved ones.

In alignment with our previous statement and the demands of the United Campus Workers, we call on the Board of Visitors and the CEO of UVA Health, Wendy Horton, to do the following:

  1. Affirm their commitment to the Hippocratic Oath and continue to provide gender-affirming health care for all individuals — regardless of age or any other marginalizing factor.
  2. Advocate on behalf of patients and providers of gender-affirming health care at the state and federal levels as they do for other issues of importance to UVA and UVA Health.
  3. Invite Trans* people and perspectives into any conversation where the outcome directly impacts their ability to live happy and healthy lives.

This list of demands is not exhaustive, and we hope to be unbounded in the ways in which we imagine a liberatory future for all. This is not a matter of partisan politics; this is life-saving medical treatment. As such, we demand that the University of Virginia and all governing bodies work to reinstate this care immediately. We ask that you sign this petition and spread widely to emphasize that our community will take care of Trans* people — and we will continue to fight for their futures and right to self-determination.
