Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands need an aid package right away. It must contain ample funding for the recovery and include immediate emergency relief so people have basics like water, food and medicine. Long-term support for rebuilding the infrastructure on the islands will be critical, and this must include funding to restart schools, establish feeding programs at these schools, and provide comprehensive mental health and wraparound services for communities. In addition, Trump must commit FEMA resources and troops that match the scale of the crisis in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The FEMA workers who are there are working hard, but there simply aren’t enough resources yet.
