Tell your legislators: Don’t let Big Oil get in the way of a Climate Superfund for Maine

Thanks to your help, Maine passed LD 1870 this year, laying the groundwork for a Maine Climate Superfund. Our efforts, alongside dozens of states nationwide, have Big Oil scared, and their lobbyists are trying to pass legislation through Congress that will block states from making polluters pay their fair share of climate damages. Help us make clear that Maine will not allow blanket immunity for Big Oil.

Climate change, driven by pollution from Big Oil’s highly profitable operations, is already affecting Maine. The 2023 and 2024 winter storms caused more than $90 million in damage to public infrastructure and untold damage to private properties. Mainers are paying the price while Big Oil reaps the benefits and lies to the American public.

A Maine Climate Superfund will fine major polluters with a business connection to Maine that emitted more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases between 1995 and 2024, and whose emissions can be traced directly to our changing climate. Funds collected will support local climate adaptation projects, such as upgrading stormwater systems or modernizing vulnerable transportation infrastructure.

Ask your legislators to stop Big Oil immunity and support the creation of a Maine Climate Superfund program! Let’s Make Polluters Pay, not Maine towns and taxpayers.
